So, you’ve decided you have some fitness goals to accomplish. Maybe you want to lose weight, gain muscle, tone up, or maybe just live a healthier lifestyle. The question is, where do you start? Do you need a personal trainer, or can you do it on your own?
The answer to this question varies from person to person. There are some challenges that come with starting a fitness journey, especially if you’ve never done it before. Some challenges are unique to certain people, while there are also some challenges that the broad population tends to struggle with. A trainer can help you get through these challenges, lets go over a few of them now.
First, when deciding if you need to hire a personal trainer or not, think about your goals. Do you know what it takes to accomplish your goals? If not, are you willing to do the research, the trial and error, and put in the time to learn how to reach those goals? If so, then you should try it on your own first. Some people enjoy learning as they go, but for those of us who don’t, it may be a good idea to hire someone who has the knowledge, has experience applying that knowledge, and can put it all together to make a plan for you. The pro to this is you get to that individualized program faster, and see your results faster. You’ll also learn along the way too!
Next, are you the type of person who finds it hard to motivate yourself to get to the gym? If you’re like most of the population, that answer is yes. Hiring a trainer adds accountability and motivation to go to the gym. Its hard to decide to take the day off when you already have a time scheduled to meet your trainer for a workout. Consistency is one of the most important things to consider when working to achieve your goals. Adding that accountability increases consistency, which accelerates results. Thats what I we want, right?!
Finally, and most importantly in my opinion, is do you know how to do the movements correctly? Not only does doing your exercises correctly increase results, but it makes them safer. A large majority of exercise are only beneficial if done correctly, and if done incorrectly can cause serious injury. Injuries keep us from our goals, so lets not get injured! One of the main jobs of a trainer is not only programming the movements you should be doing to maximize your results, but to ensure those movements are performed correctly and safely. Doing your exercises with the right technique will get you results faster, avoid injury, and allow you to feel confident about what you’re doing.
These are just a few things to think about when deciding if a personal trainer is right for you. Most trainers will give you a free session to try it out, so if you’re indecisive, like me, go ahead and try out a trainer you’ve heard good things about. But, whether you do or don’t, you have to start your journey to your goals right now! Good luck!
